Signal Reference Grounding Signal Reference grounding (SRG) is the most efficient way of dissipating the HFI and helps to shield equipment from RFI so that interference noise is no longer a threat to computer equipment. HFI is a potentially detrimental loop formed when two or more points in an electrical system that are nominally at ground potential and are connected by a conducting path such that either or both points are not at the same ground potential. HFI generated within the facility can come from a variety of sources, such as electronic ballasts, HVAC, construction activity, miswired electrical distribution or equipment, and even communication cable placement. Because of the increased speed of computer equipment and the lowering of logic voltages to compensate for the increased speed, HFI becomes a serious threat to data and system reliability. IEEE defines a signal reference grid as “A system of conductive paths among interconnected equipment that reduces noise-induced voltages to levels that minimize improper operation. Common configurations include grids and planes.” Bonding is the most efficient way of eliminating the HFI threat to computer systems. Many customers have begun to understand the benefits of SRG grounding and are starting to install signal reference grids under their raised floor structure.
This illustration shows the construction of an SRG using a bolt together grid structure and circling the perimeter of the floor and connecting to every-other floor pedestal. The perimeter conductor is then connected to the ground bus in all power panels. This construction creates an equipotential ground plane and allows connection to the grid at any pedestal in the floor structure. All server cabinets will bond to the nearest floor pedestal.
